Clip the Camera Clues.
13y the time Allenby was ready to go down to dinner, refreshed and spruce in his white dinner jacket, he had come to the conclusion that, by accident or design, the bedroom plan of Freebooter's Hall was a heaven-sent gift to the designs of lovers and of second-storey men. It would be no trick at all to gain, via the verandah and its steps, any conveniently open door. As his feet took to the stairs, Major Roger Allenby lingered in his pocket
some recent statistics concerning alluvial gold production of the Province of Loja in Ecuador. As if donning a fluid mask, he assumed the grave, slightly judicial bearing of a retired financier. The great living room, however, was deserted. He was searching in vain on a table of magazines and older newspapers for a copy of the "Royal Gazette and Colonist" when he chanced to open a copy of "Town and Travel" where someone had left a marker. Curiously he studied the marked page until the sound of a light footstep caused him to turn from the jwtrait photograph which glanced up at him. He looked up, and knew at once that this rather stately young woman must be she whose printed, face he had been admiring. (To be continued daily.)
