COUNTRY PARCHED.
MARLBOROUGH'S DRY SPELL SERIOUS SITUATION. (From Our Correspondent.) BLENHEIM, Wednesday. Heavy clouds and a cold southerly wind this morning gave promise of a break in the dry spell which has been experienced in Marlborough for nearly three months, but by early this afternoon the skies cleared considerably and the much wanted rain still has not fallen. The situation for the farm in* community is a serious one, affecting both the sheep and dairy industries results of the prolonged dry spell have been apparent in recent stock sales, where sheep frequently have been disposed of at ridiculous prices and where the bidding has been noticeably restrained. The production of all dairy companies in the district has fallen considerably and unless rain comes very soon it will decrease still further. The whole country presents a parched appearance. Only .38in of rain has fallen this year, of which ,25in fell early this month, when about two davs of light rain was experienced.
