OBITUARY.

MR. KARAKA PATATAU. I One. of the surviving elders of the | Xirati-l'oii tribe, of Waikato, Karaka I I'atatan, has died at hiti relatives' home j at Onehiuifra. ; Karaka was a man deeply versed in tlie tribal history and traditions of liis people. A resident all his life in the ; iiniijririri and Waikato districts, he had ' a wide circle of Kuropean friends. The ; interment will take place at the historic 1 family burial ground at Taupiri on Saturday.

MR. N. I. HASZARD. j (From Our Correspondent.) AYAIHI. Wednesday. The death has occurred in West Australia of Mr. Xoel Irving Haszard, a*red 2-">. son of Mr. and Mrs. M. F. Hawzard, of Wailii. Born in Waihi. Mr. Haszard was engaged in laboratory I work at the Waihi School of Mines and I later v out to the Otajio University I School of Mines, where lie. gained his j degrees. He was appointed a research scholar at the Melbourne University. Mr. Ilaszard accepted the offer of the Wiluna (lold Alining Company of a position as research metallurgist, a position lie held at the time of his death. During the past year or two lie ' made important discoveries, which "will have far-reaching effects in the treatment of West Australian and other ores. MR. JOHN HARPUR. (From Our Correspondent.) OTOKOHAXOA. Wednesday. The death has occurred of Mr. John Ffarpur. of I fangatiki, in his S.'ith year. Mr. Harpur* mother was a Maori e'hieftainess of the Xgaitaku tribe. In his youth Mr. Harpur went to sea. but later took up sawmilling, at which he worked in many parts of New Zealand. He came to' Hangatiki 21 years ago, and was an active worker until eight years ago, when he retired. Mr. Harpur is survived by his wife, four sons and three daughters.
