AIR DEVELOPMENT.

PRIME MINISTER'S GESTURE,

Taking the opportunity during a meeting of the New Zealand Defence Council in Wellington this morning, the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Sa\Tige, farewelled Group Captain the Hon. R. A. Cochrane, who has been on loan from the British Air Ministry as Chief of Air Staff in New Zealand. At the same time he extended a welcome to Group Captain Saunders, who has come from England to take over the appointment.

Speaking of the incident by telephone this morning, the Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones, said that Mr. Savage expressed the appreciation of the Government for the work that Group Captain Cochrane has done in the past two and a half years in th.e building up of the Royal New Zealand Air Force and in general air development.
