TRAVELLER AND HIS DOG,
RETURNED SOLDIER'S DEATH. f A verdict of suicide while mentally depressed was returned by the coroner, Mr. F. K. Hunt, this morning at an inquest which he concluded into the death of Percy James Pettit, traveller, aged 43, whose body was found at Karaka Bay on the afternoon of January 31 last. The deceased was a married man, a returned soldier, and at the time of his death was, with his wife, residing with his mother-in-law at Karaka Bay, Glendowie. Evidence given that deceased had been out of work for six months and was very depressed. On the morning of January 31 he left the house, saying he was going to walk to St. Helier's. He appeared to be then in his usual spirits, but after his departure two short letters were found, in one of which he wrote: "Sorry, I'm too old to start at the bottom again," and the other [ advised where his body would be found. When found deceased had a bullet wound in his left breast and alongside his body was a revolver. His spaniel dog was also lying alongside dead with a bullet hole in the head.
