CHOPPY SEA.
RACES POSTPONED.
UNTIL THIS AFTERNOON. ROWING REGATTA AT PICTON. (By Telegraph.— Special to "Star.") PICTOX, this day. Owing to a choppy sea driven into wliiteeaps by a stiff north-wester, 110 championship events were decided at the New Zealand championship rowing regatta this morning. The big crowd was disappointed when eleven crews went down to the start for tjie champion fours, and the race had to be postponed. Of the eleven crews two were reluctant to start, and Wanjranui Union definitely refused to race. Tile officials therefore postponed the event until this afternoon.
The champion single sculls wa> also postponed, the live competitors agreeing that the water was too rough.
■ The morning's racing was interesting, with close finishes, although bad steering spoilt many chances.
Canterbury, in the maidens, went off their course badly in the last quarter of a mile, ami lost fully the four lengths by which Wairau beat tliem. Avon failed to show up in this event, and it was a battle along the whole distance between Wairau and Canterbury. Other races resulted: — Lightweight Maiden Fours. — Virion (Connolly. Kirwan, Smith.
