CARDINAL EUGENIUS PACELLI was born at Ro«e on March 2, 187 S. He was made archpriest of St. Peter's, Prefect of the Sacred Congregation for Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs and of the Reverend Fabric of St. Peter, after a brilliant career. To-day he is Cardinal Secretary of State. He was created and .proclaimed a cardinal on December 16, 1929. A short time after ordination he was summoned, at the remarkably early age of 23, to important duties at the Vatican and at 25 to the Sacred Congregation for Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs, to which he later became under-secretary and then pro-secretary. On the death of the brilliant Cardinal Gasparri he xucceeded to the high office of Cardinal Secretary of State. During the war he had been nuncio at Munich, and on the foundation of the Weimar Republic he established a nunciature at Berlin.
