DOWN TO HALF-MAST.
ROAD SAFETY PENNANT.
WELLINGTON FATALITY. (By Telegraph.—rrcss Association.) WELLINGTON, Friday. Wellington's long period of freedom from road fatalities ended this morning when Phil Commons, of 20, Sydney Street, Petonc, was knocked down by a car on the Hutt Road and suffered a fracture of the base of the skull, from which he died in the public hour and a half later.
Commons, who was employed on housing work at Onslow Road, had alighted from a bus with another mail, and ran in front of the bus, making for the other side of the road.
He was struck by a car coming from Petone. His companion escaped injury.
The fatality brought down the City's road safety pennant, which has been flying since December 5.
