MONEY BY FRAUD.
EIGHT CHARGES LAID. LABOURER IMPRISONED. Eight charges of obtaining money, by fraud from the employment promotion fund were faced by Joseph Farrell, wharf labourer, aged 58, who appeared before Mr. F. H. Levieu, S.M., in the Police Court to-day. He was sentenced to one month's imprisonment.
I The prosecution stated that he had [registered for relief in 1931, and had stated that he was a married man with a wife and two children. A boardinghouse proprietor supported this statement. From then until 1937 lie repeatedly made statements of this nature, while subsequent inquiries had showed that his wife had died in 1918. The total amount in excess to that to which he was entitled was £268/4/6.
| The magistrate said this watj one of I the worst cases of deliberate misrepresentation to. obtain sustenance he had heard of. He did not consider that a fine, in addition to imprisonment, would serve any good purpose.
