WHITE RHINOCEROSES
INCREASE IN NATAL
ZTJLULAND'S RARE ANIMALS. (From Our Own Correspondent.). DURBAN, January 6. Natal's white rhinoceroses, which were threatened with extinction, are now increasing in numbers. ! Captain H. B. Potter, game warden of Zululand, says in his annual report for 1937 that there were at least 30
white rhino in tlie Hluhluwe Reserve last year. Among this number were five newly-born calves. No deaths have occurred. In the Uinfolozi Reserve white rhino are increasing reasonably. A N few casualties each year are inevitable, and this year has been no exception. Four deaths in all have been noted. One was shot by a European (who was fined £40), and three others were found dead from unknown causes. Black rhinoceroses are also increasing, but three deaths occurred last year. One aninial died fighting, and one was stabbed by natives with assegais, and the third was shot by a missionary. Two of. the .rhino had run amok among native kraals, and were alleged to have been killed in self-defence.
