HUNGARIAN .HISTORY. MOVES IN" IS-YEAR-OLD CYCLES. BUDAPEST. The "Magyar Nemzet" clrawe attention to the mysterious fact that Hungarian history, particularly that of periods of suffering or oppression, moves in cycles of IS years, and quotes some examples of the country's rebirth and regeneration.

In the meantime Prince Conrad and King Otto made up their" quarrel, and the Magyars were', defeated. Tlie Hungarians were defeated, IS,OOO being killed and 14,000 drowned in the Morava.
Eighteen years later^King Eadislas IY." defeated • the-' Czechs. utterly", at Durnkrut. In 152(>, at Moliacs, the Hungarians were -annihilated' bv an overwhelming Turkish army. King Lajos IR had already appealed to foreign courts for help,' hut received it only from King Henry VIII., of England, and a gift of 50.000 gold pieces, from the Pope. After Mohacs- ninth time eighteen years elapsed before the Turkish rule was thrown off with the recapture of Nandorfehervar in 16SS. > After the breakdown of the Freedom War in 1840, Hungary lived through a time of oppression and darkness of< spirit under the Austrian rule, till the "wise man of the country," Fercnc Dcak, arranged a reconciliation with the Emperor Francis Josef in ISGT. The Treaty of Trianon was put before the Hungarian Parliament on November ]3, 1020, and on November 5 last, IS years after, Hungary entered the first returned section' of "the territories which the treaty had detached from the country.
