CHRISTCHURC'H, this,day. Police, the fire brigade and the St. John Ambulance all congregated in Lichfield' Street early yesterday morning to rescue Mr. Frederick Cable, an able seaman, aged 30, of H.MS. Leith, who was found about o o'clock in the morning by the nightwatcliman lying on the verandah roof of a building with a fractured right leg.
Some unknown errand had taken Mr Cable up the fire escape on the buildine during the night and he had fallen off; landing on tile verandah roof below, fracturing his leg and being knocked unconscious.
rhe noise of his fall, which occurred about midnight, attracted the attention of a policeman 011 patrol below, but after a fruitless search for the cause ol the disturbance the constable moved on.
About 4.30 a.m., when lie- recovered' consciousness, Mr. Cable began to rattle energetically on the windows near him and succeeded in attracting the attention of a nightwatcliman, who summoned the polic6. .
It was found impossible to rescue the injured man without a ladder, so the lire brigade Avas called and he was quickly brought down and placed in a waiting ambulance.
Air. Cable is now in the Chmtchureh Public Hospital, his condition being satisfactory.
