FIRST AWARD.
MUSICK MEMORIAL TROPHY. EXGLISH...DESIGNER WINS. Mr. Arthur Gouge, B.Se., F.R.Ae.S., has been awarded the Musick Memorial Trophy for his design of the Empire flying-boats. T7V; . . This was decided at jq.. meeting of the Musick Memorial • Award Committee yesterday. The chairman, Sir Ernest Davis, presided, and Messrs. -W. B. Darlow, W. R. McKean, S.M., A. Ely and the secretary, Mr. Lan Horton, were present. Recommendations for the award were submitted by . the Institute'-of :Aeronautical Societies of the United States and the Royal Aeronautical Society of Great Britain. The main condition was that the trophy should be donated annually to the group, body or individual making the most effectual contribution in furthering the safety of aircraft, with special-regard-to transoceanic aviation. - — ... Mr. Gouge js chief designer to Short Brothers, Limited, Rochester, England, and in* addition he is chief engineer and director of the firm. He is -18 years of age. and lias been responsible for the production of the Empiretype of flying-boat, which was built by Short Brothers • when Imperial Airways adopted a policy of using the sea routes for their Empire services. He is regarded as one of the most brilliant designers in England, and his latest work is to be seen in the "Cabot" t}*pe of flying-boat, which will be employed on transatlantic services and over the Tasman Sea. It carries a gross load of 53,0001b'. or 12,5001b more than the standard Empire flving-boat, and it may be refuelled.in mid-air. It is probable that the trophy will be presented to Mr. Gouge by the president of the Royal Aeronautical Society, Mr. H. E. Wimperis.
