NEW DIRECTOR.
POST FOR MR. D. BARNES. STATE ADVANCES CORPORATION". (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. The appointment of Mr. David Barnes as * director of the State Advances Corporation of New Zealand is announced in, the Gazette to-night. Mr. Barnes was born in Coupe, Lancashire, England in 1804. He came to New Zealand at the age of 17 years with hi» parents, who took up farming in Canterbury, firet near Christchurch and later at Waipara. Mr. Barnes served at Gallipoli with the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces. He wae wounded on August 27, 1015, and was invalided back to Egypt and later to New Zealand. He became interested in aviation at Sockburn, and re-enlisted in the Flying Corps in 1917. He was one of the first 100 pilots to go through Sockburn, and
in February, 1918, went to England with » pilot's certificate in the Flying Corps. After instruction in England, Mr. Barnes obtained his commweion •nd was engaged in flying in England when the Arniktioe was signed. Mr. Barnes returned to New Zealand in September, 1919, and after managing a number of holdings took up land at Fairlie in 1927. He wag a foundation member of the Crown Tenants' Association, and was president of the Fairlie branch in 1934-35, ae well a* being delegate to the central association. Mr. Barnes was elected ae Labour member of Parliament for the Waitaki •eat in 1935, and at the last general election was defeated by the National Party candidate, Mr. D. C. Kidd, by 10 vote* on the official count. On a magisterial recount sought by Mr. Barnee Mr. Kidd's majority was increased to 14.
