GUNN TOO GOOD FOR POUNTNEY.

TENNIS BATTLE. SINGLES SEMI-FINALISTS. JUNIOR MATCHES PLAYED. J. "\V. Gnun's defeat of W. T. Pountney in the quarter-finals of the men's singles whs the highlight of yesterday's play in the Auckland. Liiwn Tennis Asscvciation's annual provincial tournament. In view of the fact that Pountney had eliminated A\ aikato's two strongest players in preceding rounds encouraged the belief that he might win against Gunn. It was a keen contest. After losing the first set. Pountney attacked in the t-econd set" with great success. Though the third set went to Gunn it looked to be anybody's match at the interval. Gunn won the important seventh game in the fourth set to lead 4—3, but Pountney took :i love game off his own service and, leading 40-love in the tenth game, had three set points. Gunn. playing excellent tennis, recovered himself and settled down to play carefully, while Pountney rushed the net in his anxiety to points, the result being that he went in on some wrong shots and was caught out by some cleverly placed drives. After that Gunn could not go wrong, winning the eleventh game and rounding off with a great ace service which gave him a love game to finish. Men's Doubles Played. Superior all-round tennis gave J. T. Mayson his victory over R. G. Pattinson, the Canterbury player, and Sturt, playing a steady game in a nasty cross-court wind, defeated R. W. Smith in a four-set match. The men's doubles in the late afternoon saw the elimination of the veteran combination of E. L. Bartleet and S. J. Robinson, who were defeated by E. D. Luak and J. D. Mitchell, in a five-set match in which the endurance of the younger players told the tale. X. G. Sturt and D. G. France also suffered defeat at the hands of J. C. Charters and R. G. Pattinson, the left-handers. M. T. Wilson and R. W. Smith accounted for J. D. Bull and B. McL. Wallace in straight sets. Bedford and Gunn wrote finish to the doubles account of the Waikato pair, D. B. Livingstone and J. Roach. , A start was also made with the intermediate and junior events. The four players left in the semi-finale of the men's singles are X. F. Bedford, J. W. Gunn, X. G.
