JONATHAN'S GOOD EFFORT.
There was very little fast work at Ellerslie this morning, but a few of the late arrivals were sprinted over short distances on the grase track, which wa* in firat-claes condition. In addition, some local trainers took advantage of the opportunity to give their horses a pipe-opener. . Jack Tar strode round to the three furlonge post and ran home from there in 375. He hit out with plenty of freedom, and is a fit horse. Golden Sheila (Preston) jumped away at the <seven furlongs pout and was timed to run her last six furlongs in 1.16. It was a good trial and she did it nicely. Her <s table mate Foxtoon sprinted half a mile, which occupied 49 4-ss. This youngster is growing fa«t. but he looke none the woree for his racing at Thames. A smart effort over five furlongs was credited to Jonathan, who had an advantage over Marie's Acre after running the distance in 1.2 3-5, the last half-mile taking 495.
A number of other lioreee were given pace work on the tan and sand tracks, among them being Gey Rose, the Takapuna Cup candidate, who arrived overnight.
