HOME FOR KOALAS.
UPPER FERNTREE GULLY. MELBOURXE, January 19. A new home has been found for a number of koalas ia the Xational Park, at Upper Ferntree Gully. The transfer-:, ence of four females, two males and two young koalas to the park this week from French Island is in the nature of an experiment in the preservation of this delightful animal, but the National Park trustees have been assured that the.animals should thrive in the locality Only recently the Chief Inspector of Fisheries and Game, Mr. Lewis, and several trustees inspected the site, and a« there is a sufficient supply of manna gum trees, the transfer was agreed upon. Although the park covers 20# acres of fenced ground, a special area of four acres has been more adequately protected with fencing A* the bears* home. As the manna gum trees are high, the bears should be safe from -their natural enemies. The trustees' haye decided to levy s nominal charge for admission to the bear sanctuary, although the rest of the park, with its playgrounds and aviaries, is free to the public.
