LICENSEE FINED.
POLICE VISIT, TO HOTEL ONE CHARGE DISMISSED. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) GISBORNE, this day. Two charges under the Licensing Act were preferred against* Joseph Martin, licensee of the Royal Hotel, before Mr. E. L. Walton, S.M., yesterday. Accused pleaded not guilty. Senior-Sergeant McNamara said two constables visited the hotel at 6.15 p.m. on December 10, and when the bar parlour was opened three men attempted to force their way past the constables. Constable F. Julian said it was some minutes before the door opened to his knocks. The slide was open between the bar and the parlour, and the counter appeared as if it had just been wiped. Counsel for accused, Mr. J. S, Wauchop, .submitted that there was no evidence of keeping the premises open for the sale of liquor, and very little on the charge of exposing liquor for sale. Accused was fined £5, with costs 10/, on the charge of exposing liquor for sale, the other charge being dismissed. A son of the licensee, Terence Martin, was fined £2, with costs 10/, for supplying liquor. The three men found on the premises were each fined £1, «nd co»t», N
