SECOND AUCKLAND WIN.

LED THROUGHOUT IN FOURTH RACE-BUT FINISHES LAST IN FIFTH. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The fourth Cormvel! Cup race was sailed at Plimmerton this morning and was won by Auckland, after leading from the start. The race was sailed in the most favourable weather of the contest so far, a light south westerly wind. The course was a triangular one. The start was at 8.10 and the finishing times were: Auckland, 8h 49m 325; Tauranga, 8h 51m 325; Paremata, 8h 51m 455; Manukau, 8h 53;n 15s; Wellington, 8h 53m 18s; Otago, 8h 54m Os; Wanganui, Sh 54m 245; Plimmerton, 8h 54m 325. It was the first race of the contest in which there were no capsizes. Principal interest was provided in the fight between Tauranga and Paremata for second place, and near the end between Manukau and Wellington for fourth. The Auckland crew sailed a fine race and were not challenged. Auckland now have had two wins and Wellington two wins. Otago won the fifth race, which began at 11.5 a.m., twice round a windward and leeward course: Auckland showed the way across the starting line, but Tauranga was first round the seaward buoy, with Otago a close second, and a gap to Wellington and Auckland. Paremata afterwards passed Auckland. The Otago crew won on the second and last beat, handling the boat exceedingly well. Finishing times: Otago, llh 30m Is; Tauranga, llh 31m ss; Wellington, llh 32m 12s; Plimmerton, llh 33m 345; Wanganui, llh 33m 365; Paremata, llh 33m 375; Manukau, llh 33m 445; Auckland, llh 33m 48s. The sixth race was timed to start at 1.30 p.m. The first crew to win three races takes the trophy. Wellington and Auckland both have two victories iu the present series, and Otago one. |
