SIMPSON AND "MURPHY"
" M™ PHY '" a, i f l "Jcnnv" landed with the troops at Anzac on April 25, 1915. Of these two humble donkeys "Alurphv" was to achieve fame when Private Simpson, 3rd Australian Field Ambulance, became his master. With a red cross between his two long ears, "Murphy" is said to have carried 72 wounded men through Shrapnel Gully, at a time when this place was a veritable hell and thoroughly deserving of its name. Simpson and his "donk" became a familiar sight, until poor Simpson was killed on one of his errands of mercy. "Murphy" was subsequently hit by a shell; but, I believe, was safely taken away from Anzac. A painting of these two—Simpson and "Murphy"—by Sapper MooreJones. K.%.13.. hangs in the Commercial Travellers' Club, Auckland. "C." : — $
