CAR THIEVES AND PARKING
It te unlikely thai the proposal for patrols of volunteer motorists to bnnt down ' car thieves in Auckland will commend iteelf to the Police Department or to the general public. Chases on the street* or highways by driven unskilled in eatehing offenders would create a serions menace to life, and it is questionable whether such patrols ■voulil be effective unless specially trained. In any case some form of police control or co-operation would be desirable and probably essential. The increase in car "conversions ,, —a word which gives the majority of people a mistaken idea of their eeriouaneas—is an aspect of the parking problem. Cars parked without supervision on the streets are a temptation to thioves. If they are left unlocked the danger is still greater. To deal with the trouble at its source the Automobile Association might'* consider increasing the number of night patrols in the parking areas and inaugurating a campaign for more care in parking.
