TROTTING.

DONALD DHU'S BRILLIANCY. IN HOLE MEMORIAL NOTES ON TIMARtT EVENTS. In a elow-run race at the Timaru Trotting Club's meeting on Saturday Donald Dim «utfiprinted hie seven opponents to retold an easy win in the John Hole Memorial Handicap. From 12yds behind he began smoothly to take fifth place when the field had settled down. He raced in that position for a mile and five furlongs, from which point he travelled fast to collar the leader a hundred yards from home and go on to win by two lengths. This is Donald Dhu's second win thie year, and the manner in which he pared the concluding four furlongs in 1.1 ■J-γ) showed that he is a brilliant pacer, mid one likely to reach good class. leevim trailed the leader. Fremont, for n mile and five furlongn, where lie rushed to the front, nnd hud a lend of three lengths us he wheeled for home. Halfway down the straight Donald Dim colored him, but he stayed on well to beat Toorak easily for second money. It was a good effort on the part of Ireviie, who should be seen to advantage over a distance in the near future. Toorak ran his utuial honest race. He was back in sixth place four furlongs from homo and came on strongly to secure third and register his fifteenth place-performance since he won a race over a year ago. Fremont Makes Amends. R. B. Berry was able to keep Fremont in behind the leaders until the straight wan reached in the Pareora Handicap, with the result that when the American colt wan pulled out for a final run he flew

past his opponents and won in good style from Horsepower, who had taken the lead six furlongs from home. This was Horsepower's bent effort in hie new owner'* colours. The consistent Toorak obtained third money, thus making his sixteenth consecutive placing since he won a race. Waitaki Power was with the leader four furlongs from the judge, but tired in the straight.

Coqaette Plaasas. Coquette had an easy win in the Farewell Handicap. She began smartly and was third when a furlong had been covered. She remained in that position until the straight was reached, when she strode to the front and won easily. She was successful in a mile race at Grey mouth recently, and up to ten furlongs she is fairly capable. Charles Russell showed improvement on any of his previous efforts by being one of the leaders for three parts of the journey and then running second. Black Marble finished gamely to secure third, but Bedrock failed after having every chance. iMprwamsnt Expected. Despite two meagre showings nt Addingtori at New Year Janeworthy wax sent out a hot favourite in the Salisbury Handicap, and won comfortably. At the Canterbury Park Club's meeting she failed to begin promptly, but on this occasion nhe got nway smartly. She was in second place when a furlong had been covered and raced in that position until the straight was reached, where she daehed into the lesd and won by as much as her driver wanted her to. She is a half-sister to Blair Athol and Silver de Oro. Colonel Axworthy travelled fast fcom fifth place three furlongs from home to gain a good second. Battlevale, who was successful at the West Coast carnival, was third. . Gnat Linnet Again. Oreat Linnet won hie second race in two weeks when he was first to cross the line in the Waimate Handicap. He was followed home by Native Ruler and Patch's Discovery, but neither looked like beating him. Great Linnet has improved a lot with racing and stayed out the mile and five furlongs in pleasing style. Native Ruler went more steadily than usual and beat Patch's Discovery in the lant few strides for second money. Patch's Discovery is a dependable trotter and should soon win a race over a distance. The remainder of the field faulted at some stage of the race. Erratic Pacing. Although he lost several lengths five furlongs from home, Cruiser staged a brilliant finishing effort to win the Kerrytown Handicap by a narrow margin. He is one of the most erratic pacers in training, and his improved performance in this race met with the disapproval of a majority of the public. He started in the Salisbury Handicap earlier in the day and broke badly during the contest. An inquiry was held and the stewards accepted the owners' explanation.
