A former t-(importer of the Ballance (o.ivernment, and probably the last of the represent at i ves elected in 1890 —the year of the liitr maritime strike —to the eleventh Parliament of New Zealand, Mr. Will in m WKcox Tanner, has died in hin 87th year. Born at Moulton, in Northamptonshire. Mr. Tanner was educated nt a Church <• t England .School. In consequence of a trade depression in the United Kingdom which followed the Glasgow Bank failure, Mr. Tanner emigrated to New Zealand in IS*W, arriving at Lyttelton by the ship Waits ra. on Christmas Eve. of that year. At the general election following immediately after the 1890 strike he was elected as representative for Jleathcote, and assisted in the displacement of the Sir Harry Atkinson Ministry and its replacement by the administration of John Ballance. The Heatbeote electorate being abolished and merged into Lyttelton and Avon in 1S!)3, Mr. Tanner represented Avon until 1908. He was a member of Parliament for 18 yeaiv. until he was defeated by the iate Hon. t;. W. Russell. .Air. Tanner was «i supporter in general of the Liberal Governments of Ballance. Scddou and Ward, but always maintained a considerable, measure of independence. For a number of year* he was chairman of the Public Accounts Committee and the Railways Committee of Parliament. In 1595 he was a member of a commission on tariff revision. He was a Forester continuously for over 60 years, Nince the. death of his wife 11 yegrs ago Mr. Tanner had led a retired life at hie residence, in Linwood, Christchurch, until recently, when he went, to Wellington to reside with his only son, Mr. W. A. Tanner, of Khandallah.
