TE RAPA TRIALS.
WHIRLING IMPROVING. CANDIDATES FOR ELLERSLIE. HORSES FOR TARANAKI CIRCUIT. (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") HAMILTON, this day. The going on the course proper 30ft out and No. 1 grass was in comparatively good order at Te Eapa this morning when candidates with holiday engagements ahead were sent along. Much useful work was accomplished on the course proper (righthanded), which was used by Ellerslie candidates, and on the inside grass, the opposite way round, by horses who are to race on the Taranaki circuit. Galloping on the course proper horses were assisted by a brisk following wind in the straight, while on the other track they had to contend with a head wind up the straight, and times on this latter track were correspondingly slower, despite the fact that horses here were covering less ground. The best effort of the morning on the course proper was a smartly run five furlongs by Whirling (Gollop), who was doing better than Rollicker (McKenzie) throughout in 1.4, the first three being cut out in 36 2-o.s, and four in 50.4-ss. Whirling looks in forward condition for racing ahead, and if the tracks are at all on the soft side over Christmas lie will have to be conceded bright prospects. Olympus (McKenzie) was shading Beau Repaire (Anderson) over five fm-longs in 1.7 1-5, the first four occupying 53 l-ss. Both executed their work well, and are in good heart for 'holiday racing. Chief Lap worked steadily over a round, and is due to leave this evening for New Ply. mouth. Sir Tommy (Gollop) was doing, better than Forest Acre (Thomson) and Prince Rangi (Hain) throughout five furlongs in .1.4%. Sir Tommy proved a big disappointment at the Waipa fixture, and may be seen to better advantage round the Taranaki circuit. Mangukaha (Thomson) traversed a round in 2.4, her last •half mile in 575. Dark Shadow (Thomson) hit out over six furlongs in 1.18. Ke is bearing a healthy appearance, and with firm tracks over Christmas he may pay expenses on his visit to Ellerslie. -The two-year-olds, Classic (Bay) and Wyndora (.Tones), got to the end of five in 1.6 1-5. They ran their first three in 365, and four in Sl'z&s. Kittle (Hain) and Dan's Delight; (Bootsma) were associated over a round in 2.8. They ran their first half mile in 52 l-ss, and were sticking to their work over the deciding stages of" the effort. Tonnerre (James) assisted by Fleur d 'Or (Smith), got to the end of six furlongs in 1.21. the first four in 545, and five in 1.8. Tonnerre, who looks well, executed his work in pleasing style. Tassau (Winder) and Jean Quex (Gollop) were companions over half a mile, but were not timed. Calorie (Jones) was not bustled to cover a round in 2.8. She is bearing a healthy appearance, and should strip fit and well for pending engagements. Sir Lvsander (Winder) accounted for Lysander Lad. (Brown) over four, furlongs in 525. the first three in 36 4-ss. Mon Acre (Long) ran half a mile in 545. and in a similar essay Lornacre (Long) recorded the same time. He looks improved, and jwill bear watching ever the holidays.
On tlie Xo. 1 grass Tosh (McTnallv) came home from tl»e half-mile post in 545. He is in good shape for Taranaki. Friskland (Mclnally). another of M. J. Carroll's team for New Plymouth, ran five furlongs in 1.6. She looks well enough, and it will be interesting to note liotv she shapes over the holidays.
Bryce Street (Brady) negotiated four flights of hurdles in polished style. This member of Carroll's string will contest hurdle engagements at Taranaki.
Mio Lume (Day) and Aramis . were associated over the Fame fences, and though they got through their task: safely the exhibition was not an impressive one. X. R. McKenzie will be riding on the first day of the Taranaki meeting,-when-his mounts willinclude Aussie Ra, Race Gall, Gold Glare, Le Marcus, Kaughty Marietta and Xoitaro. He will return for' the 'second day at THlerslie and~tlien motor back to Stratford. At Awaptini he-will have the mount 1 on : Race CalK W.. M. Thomson and H. Long, the local lightweights, will be engaged at Ellerslie, the former riding on the opening day Parquet, Dark Shadow, Devon and Lady Fox. and Long will pilot High Tea, Cheval de Yolee, Lornacre and Du Maurier.
