ON THE LAND.

OPPORTUNITY OPEN.

RIGHT TYPE OF YOUTH.

appeal by headmaster.

The need for a wider realisation in the community of the possibilities open to boys who went on the land was emphasised by the headmaster of the Dilworth School, Mr. Xoel Gilisuti. speaking at the prize-giving ceremony yesterday. "The position of our primary industries seems to me to be a serious one,' he said. "Perhaps the most serious aspect of the problem is the general conviction which I have found throughout the community that there is no hope on the land. As" a result, parents, in far too many cases, discourage boys de*irotw of obtaining farm work from doing lso. M S£ He added that he had had evidence this year of what seemed to him to be a serious result of a shortage of farm labour. Men in many instances were reducing their herds by one-third in order to carry on single-handed. If that practice was at all general, the ultimate result for the country must be serious.

He had had a fairly long connection with the farming community and he had stated before that there were a large number of farmers who responded wholeheartedlv to his request that they should take an" interest in the boy as well as in his work. Until the community realised that there was at leaet as much opportunity for a healthy industrious lad in the* country as there was in the town, the country would never recover a proper balance in its basic industry. "With all that may be said against farming." he continued, "there is still more opportunity in the country for a young man of the right type to become hi* own master at an early age than there ever will be in the town."

He stressed his desire that parents should give reasonable thought to the future of their boys, and to avoid as far as possible catchcries which were not founded on fact.
