MT. EDEN SWIMMING SEASON OPENED.
A RAINY NIGHT.
GOODWILL CUP DECIDED.
CRACKS FIND HANDICAPS TOO BIG. Only ducks, not mere swimmers, could have revelled in the miserable rainy conditions prevailing for the carnival with which the Mount Kden Amateur .Swimming Club opened its season last night at its open-air baths. Kntliusiastic competitors. however, rallied together in hue style, making possible ;_-o<>, [ fields and interesting racing. Members of the Eastern Suburbs Club were the quests of the Mount Kden Club, the juniors of both clubs taking part in the annual contest lor the Goodwill Cuj>. the gift of the Mayor of Auckland. Sir Ernest Davis. Mount Kden was again successful, with live firsts to Kastei 11 Suburbs' two. The visitors were welcomed by the Mount Kden president, Mr. T. McXab. The Kastern Suburbs Club's gratitude for the
invitation was expressed by Mr- AY. O. StOL-klry, who thanked the Mount Eden members :or their ciicDiiragemi'nl of his comparatively >01111,' and weak club. The Mayor 01 Mount Kden. Mr. K. J. Mills, in addressing tlie small crowd ot spectators, wished the cluh a successful season. He also paid a tribute to the work of its efficient and vigorous secretary. Mr. Harry Moore, to whom he attributed its progress.
A pleasing incident wat the presentation by Mr. McXab. on behalf of the Mount Ellen Club, of a clo» k to ills. A. S>. Priestley, w hose many years of loyal scivice in its interests were thus fittingly acknowledged. Mrs. Priestley was warinh applauded when she expressed her thanks lor the gift. The star swimmers, Peter Hanan. Xoel Crump. Alan I'ascoe. Bob Frankham and Peter Mathieson, all fulfilled their engagements. It was a night ot' successes by limit competitors. ;ind the handicaps were too heavy tor these champions. Nevertheless. .Mathieson was first, in 2.33. in a heat of the 220 yds open, narrowly defeating Hanan. whose time was in the vicinity of 2.30. Pascoe took pait in a different heat and. although, like Hanan, lie did not extend himself. Hanan did easilv the faster swim.
Crump and Frankham were starters in the 50yds open. Each had a second place in heats, being close on 255. The most exciting finishes were Been in this event, which required six lieuts_ and two semi-final*. In the final the Waitemata man. Yictor Capper, forged into the lead and won in 27 l-ss. Such was his consistency that he won both a heat and semi-final in 27 2-ss. The iront-niarkers. Lane, was second in the final, and E. Woods, third.
First place in the final of the furlong was gained by G. \ eitch in 3 .5. He is a member of the Mount Kden Club, which was additionally prominent in view ot the fact that the second anil third men. \\ . Gribble and R. Crunch, were liw clubmates. a liberal start. F. Morrison could not be )ieade<.l in the 100 yds open breaststroke, which he won in 1.00. As he bettered his assessed time by much more than 5 per cent, it is likely the trophy will be awarded to the runner-up. Grace Friestlev. who share* her mother's keenness as a worker lor the Mount Kden Club. Miss Priestley won a heat in 1.3.3 slightly exceeding the limit applying to her assessed time. In the 66 2-3vds ladies handicap. Jlarjorie Black, Waitemata Club, had a turn at victorv. Her sprint took 44 3-js. a satisfactory fresh-water effort. Miss B. James, a Mount Eden intermediate, was a close 6< George Berry, mount Eden, carried off the open diving competition and deser\e*l the judges' verdict. WATER POLO. The senior water polo teams, Ponsonby and Mount Eden, drew 2-all. Play was hard and exciting. At half-time Ponsonby led by one goal, scored by Sellars. In the second spell Wiles equalised for Mount Eden, and Wilson soon afterward put Ponsonby In the lead with another goal. Forest then scored for Mount Eden. Mr. W. Elwarth was referee.
