OUR WAR WINS BIG HANDICAP.
TROTTING AT CLAUDELANDS. IRON MAN RETURNS LONG ODDS. Two trotting meetings and one galloping fixture were held in the Dominion this afternoon. The Waikato Trotting Club decided its spring fixture, which was to have been held on October 15, but owing to the Government fixing election day for that date the meeting was postponed till to-day. The New Brighton Trotting Club held its summer fixture at Christchurch, while the Otaki-Maori Racing Club also held a one-day meeting at Otaki. There was a great surprise in the first race, the Introductory Handicap, at the Waikato fixture, where the weather was fine and the attendance large, Iron Man winning and paying over two score on the straightout machine. The Eureka Handicap The Waikato Handicap, the chief event of the day, went to Our War, who was at good double figures. At Otaki in a small field Royal Record defeated the favourite, Porotiti, in the Hack Hurdles, and Pursuit scored a comfortable win in the Maiden Plate. Three outsiders filled the leading places in the Trial Handicap at the New Brighton trots, where the Improvers' Handicap was won by Precious Metal.
