SPECULATORS FOILED.
GROCERS' SMALL STOC tS. Grocers will gain 2d a lb in addition to their i ormal margin of profit on stocks held which were benight before the wholesale price was raised, but these stocks are small. The secretary of the Auckland Master Grocers* Association, Mr. R. Barker, said this morning that there was an attempt to speculate when the increased guaranteed price was announced. This was foiled by the Minister's delay in increasing the grocer's buying price. Surplus stocks bought at that time have since been exhausted, and holdings bought at the lower price which will be sold at the increased rate now ruling are small. A further measure was taken to check speculation, according to Mr. A. H. Houeyfield. Auckland representative of the internal Marketing Division. A regulation was brought in by the Government a fortnight ago giving the Division power to take over butter held in cool store. Speculators would thus be forced to hold stocks in the shop if they wished to profit by the increase.
