COACH AS CAPTAIN.
WELLINGTON DECISION. TOWN V. COUNTRY MATCH. BADCOCK WAS OTAGO SKIPPER. The Wellington Cricket Association has eet a fine example by appointing its professional coach, J. R. Sheffield, to be captain of the Town XI. to meet Country at the Basin Reserve to-morrow ■ and Thursday. As there is little prospect of the representative skipper coming from' the provincial districts, the Englishman is apparently the Wellington Plunket Shield skipper-elect. Obviously the best man should be appointed, whatever his status. This no doubt had something to do with W. R. Uaminoiid'e choice in the last scries of Anglo-Australian Tests, although he had turned so-called "amateur," after having been a professional all his life. It may be recalled that F. T. Badcock, when coaching at Dunedin, was Otago's captain at.Eden Park at New Year '1934. and Christmas, 1935. So Sheffield's appointment, if confirmed, would not be unique in Plunket Shield cricket. The teams are:— Town.—Sheffield (captain), Rice, J. A. Ongley, Ell, Kemp, Capetick, Hepburn, Rainbird, O'Neill, Pareloe, G. L. Whyte and McKeown (one to be omitted). Country.—Norris (captain), Pritchard, Gallichan, Murchison, Robertson, Betts. Thomas, Connor, McVicar, Downee and Thorpe. Seven of the selected players are from Manawatu —McCoy (Taranaki, formerly Parnell), Symes (Xelson) and Petersen (Wjiirarapa) were not-available, after being in the original
