COMPETITIONS HELD.
SHAKESPEARE SOCIXTT.
Elocution competitions arranged by the Auckland branch of the British Kmpire Society were held on Saturday night in the presence of many parents and friends. Miss Florence Walker presided. Speeches and scenes from the plays were performed by the young members, who were attired in handsome and colourful costumes in keeping with the characters they represented.
I Following the performance, the judge. Mr. J. H. Harvey, addressed the candidate!, and in the course of helpful and critical remarks expressed his pleasure at the good articulation of all candidates and the general high standard maintained. During the evening eongs were contributed by Esme Leach.
The president of the Auckland branch, Mr. Henry W. Wilson, presented prizes and cert i Ilea tee to the following competitors:—Under 10 years: prize, Cicely l'enton; certificates of merit, Barbara Scott and Warren Dibble. Under 12 years: prize, Colleen Keeeiiig; certificates of merit, Marilyn Uardincr and Pamela Waddell. Under 13 years: prize, Shirley Hancock; certificates of merit, Barbara Bell, Enid Evans. June Hunt and Olen Nicholson. Under 19 years: prize, Mavis Hancock; certificates of merit. \ gal re Dennis and Rona Petty. Over H> yeurs: prize, Edna Lewis; certificates of I merit. Valerie Bhickmore and June Uifford.
