CROSSING SMASH. TRAIN WRECKS CAR. REMARKABLE ESCAPES. 4-YEAR-OLD CHTT.T) UNHURT. Though the car in which they were travelling was badly damaged, none of the four persons involved in a level crossing accident at Porter s Avenue, Eden Terrace, to-day, was critically injured. Mr. Arthur Cook, aged 47, suffered concussion and head injuries. His condition is the most serious. His wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Cook, aged 49, suffered mild concussion and a scalp wound. Her condition is stated to o* not serious. A passenger in tjje back seat, Mr?. J. Bell, suffered a broken collar-bone as well as slight concussion. Her condition is also satisfactory. A four-year-old child, wl'o was also in the back seat, escaped injury. All four persons live in Bentleigh Avenue, Avondale. After receiving first-aid treatment on the scene of the accident, the injured .were removed to the hospital in a St. John ambulance. Tiain Travelling Slowly. The accident happened shortly after ! 11 o'clock. The car, an old sedan model, was going up Porter's Avenue from Eden Terrace, and the train had just left the Mount Eden station on its way to Henderson. At the time of the smash the train was travelling fairly slowly. A car driven by a young man, Mr. Gordon Butt, of 2, King Street, Kingsland, turned the corner from the terrace into the avenue as the collision took place, and Mr. Butt went to the smashed car and helped to extricate the women. A member of the St. John Ambulance, he* gave first-aid to the hijured car passengers. Car Wrecked. The left front wheel of the car received the full force of the impact, and the vehicle was thrown on its eide soine 15 feet along the line. The front portions of the vehicle were demolished, while the crossing was strewn with broken glass. There was scarcely a part of the car that retained its original ehape. The doors were practically torn off the hinges, the chassis was badly buckled, while in at least once place the wooden framework of the body was broken into two separate pieces. It is considered remarkable that when fo much damage was done to the car the four pereons concerned should have escaped comparatively lightly.
