The accident happened shortly after ! 11 o'clock. The car, an old sedan model, was going up Porter's Avenue from Eden Terrace, and the train had just left the Mount Eden station on its way to Henderson. At the time of the smash the train was travelling fairly slowly. A car driven by a young man, Mr. Gordon Butt, of 2, King Street, Kingsland, turned the corner from the terrace into the avenue as the collision took place, and Mr. Butt went to the smashed car and helped to extricate the women. A member of the St. John Ambulance, he* gave first-aid to the hijured car passengers. Car Wrecked. The left front wheel of the car received the full force of the impact, and the vehicle was thrown on its eide soine 15 feet along the line. The front portions of the vehicle were demolished, while the crossing was strewn with broken glass. There was scarcely a part of the car that retained its original ehape. The doors were practically torn off the hinges, the chassis was badly buckled, while in at least once place the wooden framework of the body was broken into two separate pieces. It is considered remarkable that when fo much damage was done to the car the four pereons concerned should have escaped comparatively lightly.
