YOUTHS IN COURT. CONVERSION CHARGES. THEFTS ALSO ALXJQ6ED. Seven youths, packed as tightly as the proverbial sardines into the dock in the Police Court to-day, answered do2ens of charges of theft and unlawful conversion of motor cars in the city between the months of Auirust and October. They wefe arrested on November 2 and 3 by Detective Cromwell following lengthy investigations into numerous complaints of car conversions and thefts of motor car parts and accessories. Detective >. Cromwell also arrested seven other youth* on similar charges. Of this ba™h two have been admitted, to probation, one was dealt with by the Children's Court, and the rest are awaiting trial. The ages of the youths who appeared before Air. Q. R. Orr Walker, S.M., this afternoon, ranged between 17 and 22 years. One appeared on 22 joint charges, another 16, another 15, the remainder being jointly charged on from one to three counts, while one appeared on three separate charges and another on one. The charges before the Court involved the theft of motor car parte, oil pump, a car radio, an overcoat, a rug, a cylinder, torch, motor wheels and tyres, tools, a gear box, car battery, carburetter and vacuum tank, of a total value of £60 18/6. The total valne of the cars which they *ere charged with unlawfully converting to their own use to £1118. All have been recovered. The hearing began shortly before lunch, and will be continued until late this afUßioon. (Proceeding.)
