NAZI COLONIES.
AMERICAN OPINION. OPPOSED TO RETURN. Every week tbe American Institute of Public Opinion takes the views of a cross-section of voters throughout the United States upon some question of general importance. A month ago the institute issued the following bulletin: With another chapter of Adolph Hitler's "Mein Kunpf' translated into political reality with the annexation c-f the Sudetenland. observers in every ]>art of the world are speculating as to what the German Chancellor's next move will be. Will it be a move for the'restoration to (Jermany of the lost (Jerman colonies, and if so how would the move be received ? Although the United States has no direct interest in the former German colonies, liaving taken none of them after the war, a nation-wide survey indicates the American public is markedly unsympathetic to German claims for her old territories. The institute asked a cross-section of American voters: "Do you think the colonies taken from Germanq after the World War by England, France, and Japan should be given buck? The vote: Yes 22 p.c. Xo 78 The survey gives some indication of the wav American sympathies have been oriented in the "Chechoslovakian crisis, and it gives further proof of the fact in issues involving lier World War allies it is extremely difficult for the United States to be neutral in sentiment. Within a few hours of the close of the Four-Power conference at Munich, the* institute began a survey of immediate American reactions. The complete returns show: 1. That a majority of Americans (.M» per cent) think England and France did the best thing in giving in rather than in going to war. _ 2. That only 2.1 per cent think Hitler's Munich demands were justified, and t .1. Thnt a majority of 60 per cent think the settlement will only postpone a new and deadlier possibility of war.
