DRIVERS' SHIFTS.
AMENDMENT SOUGHT. DIRECTION GIVEN BY COURT. That both parties should confer, and. if thought desirable, refer the mattei» to the disputes committee with a view to arriving at a working arrangement satisfactory to all parties, is the direction given in a judgment by the Court of Arbitration delivered by the president, Mr. Justice O'Regan, on an appli cation for an amendment of the New Zealand passenger transport drivers' award. The application was made by the New Zealand Federated Drivers and Related Trades' Industrial Association of Workers. The application was for an orde; amending the Xew Zealand passenger transport drivers' award, dated Jun* I. 1938, bv deleting clause 25, which grants partial exemption to the North Shore Transport Company. Limited. The effect of deleting the clause would be to make the company subject to the provisions of a clause which limits the number of broken shifts that may be worked. The association contended that the company should observe the same provisions regarding broken shifts and periods off duty as other employers. The company contended that it was impracticable to observe the same provisions with regard to these matters as applied to other companies.
The Court considered that, while it had not I icon shown to lie practicable for the i' " *iiy to observe the general award «■< us regarding the number of broken .•.,.fts, it did seem that the company could so arrange its shifts that fewer broken shifts misht be necessary.
