IMPORTS OF CARS. MONTHLY AVERAGE, 2648. BRITAIN'S CLEAR LEAD. Convincing evidence that the motor industry is still enjoying buoyant trade is contained in statistics issued to-day by the Customs Department. | Covering the first nine months of the current year, the tables show that the record average figures of 2600 cars a month, which wen- recorded during the same period last year, Imivc* been exceeded. the new average being 2648 cars a month. During the nine months period the total value of passenger motor vehicles imported into the Dominion in an assembled, unassembled or completely knocked-down state was £3.75!).5:>0. Ihe total value of commercial vehicles imported during the same period was £774.892.
Ihe total value of passenger and commercial vehicles imported during the period shows a slight decrease on" last year's figures, however, the totals being £4,•>25,482 and £4,580,875 respectively. Of the total of passenger vehicles imported, (ireat Britain supplied 14,496 vehicles valued at £2.292,154. Canada was second with 6803 vehicles worth £1,061,020, and the United States third, with 2352 vehicles valued at £386,502. These totals do not include buses.
There were also small imports from Germany and Italy, which supplied 28 and 02 cars respectively.
Commercial vehicles imported during the period under review totalled 44:{9. Including lorries, vans, trucks, huses and chassis, these vehicles were valued at X'774,8!>2. Only (18 of these vehicles were in an assembled condition, the remainder being either unassembled «r completely knocked down.
Chassis for passenger vehicles otli-'r than buses were imported onlv from Oreat Britain, the total for the Dominion being 10.
