BUILDINGS AT TAKAPUNA.

I Your very brief roport of mv remarks at the council meeting last week'in regard to housing permits scorns to have created an entirely wrong impression of what actually occurred. T did not object to any permit bein'r issued. I drew the council's attention to the fact that one permit issued during the month was for the erection of a house to the virtue of £27-), and this holism was to he erected in the holiest rated area of -Milford—literallv on our front, doorstep. I said I hoped the borough ins (vector exercised reasonable disci 1111i nation in the issuing of permits. Xhe house w already well under construction, so it was obviously too late to object to the issuing of a permit, 711 answer to Mr. Rollo's question. I replied that in certain circumstances most certainly I would object or refuse a permit. My contention is that there must be something very much wrongs with our GoYernmcnt architects who spend up to £1500 on a working man s home if we in Takapuna can erect a reasonable facsimile for £275. I al so think the 'council would see the matter in a very different light if the Government, whfch is -erecting a couple of dozen houses in a group in our borough. should decide to follow the council's lead and put up £275 houses. This. I understand, is not to be a home, but simply holiday accommodation. There are some very nice houses in this highly-rated area, and out of fairness to the ratepayers in tli<« vicinity their valuations should lie protected. not destroyed, by the council. Obviously, if many such bouses are erected in any locality, valuations will fall and the council's revenue will suffer accordingly. I might add that I resent being labelled ''snob" bv our Mayor when my actions were dictated purely by ffiy consideration for the ratepayers who Voted me into the council for the 'sole purpose of safeguarding their interests—which I am endeavouring to do.
