DISCHARGED PRISONERS.

TRIBUTES TO OFFICIALS,

The urgent need for fund* to continue tho work of the Discharged Prisoners' Aid Society was mentioned by several speakers at the annual meeting of the society.

The chairman declared that the marked decline in the average number of prisoners in the Auckland prison between 10'2!> and 1038 tva« a testimonial to the work of the society. Tributes were paid to the secretii y, the Rev. <_». E. Moreton, and to the Auckland Placement Officer, Mr. J. R. Elsbury, for thenwork in assisting prisoner* and their families. Replying, Mr. Elsbury paid tribute to the society'# activities.

Decision to ask the Government for an increase of £200 in its grant to the society wiw made by the meeting. A committee was set tip to approach various financial organisations for assistance.

Officers elected were:—Patron, Archbishop Averill; president, Sir Ernest Davis; vice-presidents, Sir Henry Horton, Sir Cecil Leys, Sir Walter Stringer, Mr. Justice Callan, Mr. A. J. Stratford. Mr. W. R. Wilson; honorary medical officers, Dr. W. (». Borrie, Dr. T. H. Pettit; honorary solicitors, Messrs. K. C. Aekins, B. E. Goldwater, J. W. Manning, H. A. Stedman and T. Sparling; honortry audit >r, Mr. J. E. Duncan; executive committee, Archbishop Averill, chairman, the Revs. A. Astor, T. Halliday, H. K. Vickery, A. E. Orr and F. de Lisle, Captain S. R. Banyard, Messrs. L. J. Armitajre, C. F. Bennett, «T. W, Court. P■ Hnyward, J. W. Manning, W. M. Rayner and W. H. Whitelaw and the Rev. (I. E. Moret'on.

At the conclusion of the meeting musical items were given by Misses Irene and May Frost and Messrs. Trevor Sparling and Leslie Kuiwell.
