BIRKENHEAD COUNCIL.
The Birkenhead Borough Council met last nizht, the Mayor, Mr. E. J. Osborne, presiding. Drainage. — The sanitary inspector reported that connection of houses with the sewerage system was steadily proceeding. 230 having been completed. Street Lighting.—The Mayor stated that the borough would benefit to the extent of £74 per annum by the increased discount on street lighting from 25 to 33 1-3 per cent. The council agreed to install 19 additional lamps and to advise the Waitemata Power Board accordingly, after the public services committee had investigated the most advantageous location. Municipal Conference.—The Mayor, Mr. E. J. Osborne, was appointed delegate to the Xew Zealand Municipal Association conference at Dunedin from March 7 to 10. Safety Lines.—The suggestion of the Birkenhead School Committee was agreed to that the safety white lines on the roads opposite the school should be repainted periodically. Women's Social.—The invitation was accepted to attend the presidents evening of the Birkenhead Women s Associa- , tion on Tuesday evening, November 8. Kauri Point.—The resignation was received of Mr. W. H. Rickwood as caretaker of Kauri Point Domain. Joint Traffic Control. —A letter from the Commissioner of Transport, Mr. G. W. Laurenson, intimated that he would be pleased to convene the conference and preside thereat, as requested, regarding co-ordination of traffic control on the North Shore. The Town Clerk, Mr. H. Kemp, stated that an official from the Department at Auckland telephoned that afternoon that the Commissioner was rn his way to Auckland and would have only one day here to spare. Tentative arrangements had, therefore, been made for the conference at Auckland this evening. 1
