NAVAL PROMOTION.

COMMODORE'S POST.

CAPTAIN RIVETT-CARNAC.

ACHILLES GOING HOME.

(By Teleirrnph.-—Own Correspondent.)

WELLINGTON, this dav.

At present in command of HALS. Leander. Captain -T. W. Rivett-Carnac is to become commodore of the .sea-going squadron of the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy in succession to t'ommixlore I. <■'. (Ilcnnic. who to take H.M.S. Achilles back to England for rccomniissioning.

Announcing the appointment to-day, the Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. • Jones, said it would l>e effective from the date Commodore Glennie left Auckland. Tlim will l>e very early in December. Captain Rivett-Carnac will continue to occupy the appointment until his term in New Zealand expires.

The Achilles would sail with her present complement, including New Zealanders, said Mr. .Tones. When the cruiser arrived in England the Imperial rating* would be paid off and replaced by other Imperial men, and the New Zcalanders would return with the ship to Auckland next year. Commodore Glennie would leave her in England, be-' cause his period of service with the New Zealand Division would by then have l>een completed.

It is unlikely that the Leamler will also go to Kngland for recommi-sioning at" the end of next year and that Captain Rivett-Carnac will relinquish the post of commodore when he takes the cruiser home. This may be a-i-tuned from the fact that Imperial officers are usually attached to the division for a period ranging from two to two and a half years. Captain Rivett-Carnac arrived in August of last year. At the time of his appointilient to New Zealand. Captain Rivett-Carnac wa.s the only officer on the active 1 i-1 of the Royal Navy who had completed courses at all three staff colleges - Navy. Army and Air Force. His last command was that of the anti-aircraft cruiser Coventry.
