A ROYAL GOVERNOR.
The possibility of the appointment of a member of the Royal Family as GovernorGeneral of one of the Dominions has often been mentioned, and it has been thought probable that any such appointment would be made first to Canada, as the senior Dominion. fiut Australia is to have the honour first. In the Commonwealth, from November, 1940, the personal representative of the King will be the King's brother, the Duke of Kent. This new departure will create great interest in every British country, for, taken in conjunction with the annoiincement that the King nnd Queen are to visit Canada, it indicates that the- Royal Family is now both able and willing |o widen the field of its service. Hitherto, through trnrlition and force of circumstance, that service lias been given almost entirely in tlie I'nited Kingdom. No King has ever yet visited any of the Dominions, and the visits of members of the Royal Family have been few, and rarely repeated. The news that the Duke and Duchess of Kent and their family are to go to Australia, not for a brief visit, but to make their home there for four or five years, is therefore gratifying to all the Dominions. The appointment will strengthen the bunds of kinship throughout the British Commonwealth.
