There is a most unusual monument at Salt Lake' City, in the United States. It is one which has been erected to the seagulls, because they once rendered a fine service to the State of Utah. Some years ago farmers were in despair because a vast army of grasshoppers was invading their land. Every <rreen thing in their path was being devoured, and it was thought that nothing could save the crops. The winged army was advancing in hordes. At this very critical time a vast company of seagulls flew in from the Pacific, settled on the area which was threatened with complete destruction, and, getting busily to work, they ate up myriads of the pests, to the great jov of the farmers. The people of Ut&h could not thank the birds, so instead they erected a monument to the seagulls. It is a tall column, with a beautiful seagull poised at the summit.
