LEASE RENEWED.
HARBCUR BOARD DECISION.
THREE MEMBERS OPPOSED,
Finality wan reached by the Auckland Harbour Board at a meeting yesterday afternoon in connection with an application by a city firm for renewal of the lease of premises occupied by them in Lower Queen Street for a further period of 50 years.
The recommendation of the board-in - committee was that the lease should be granted.
Mr. H. R. Mackenzie thought the board should further consider the matter and go into the whole position of the boartfs leases. He said it had been rushed through. The chairman, Mr. W. B. Darlow: It has been considered by the board on six different occasions.
Mr. Mackenzie: All the board's leases should be considered.
Mr. Darlow: Nothing would be gained hy holding it up further. Mr. E. J. Phelan said he was entirely opposed to the recommendation. The lease was to be granted without restrictions. and that was wrong. The lease would permit the retention of the building for the next fifty years, and would be an eyesore to future generations. When the Waverley Hotel lease was granted they knew that they were going to spend £60,000. In this case there was no stipulation, and he was sorry the city had not taken the matter up.
Messrs. E. J. Pheian, P. Savegh and H. R. Mackenzie recorded their votes against the lease being granted when the motion was put.
