THE FIRST SURPRISE.
KIELY At AKARANA.
A TWO AT SIXTEENTH SPELT BRYANT'S DEFEAT.
A giant went by the board at Akarana when M. Kiely achieved the unexpected in eliminating L. J. Bryant. Seldom were glorious uncertainties more clearly exemplified. Bryant, though defeated, died hard, as his splendid recovery from 4 down bears Witness. The real body blow was Kiely's 2 at the sixteenth after Bryant had so doggedly retrieved an almost hopeless position. His four at the eighteenth to again square the match, though noble, sapped his resistance. The 2at the sixC?i WO |' the n,at<h - It would seem -nat the championship resolved itself into a question whether G. Coltman, C. K. iviad or J) Coyle have the necessary guns to cope with r. G. Smith.
At Otahiihu .T. L. ( lark, in carrying on H «•''o"n v 7" loutl ''l the hard-hitting *1 i , ' leaves him to repel the wVn n "V K BeH in defence of his title. Bell, though undoubtedly a lad of promise, will find the 30 holes against I'lark a difficult road to traverse, as Clark's putting in wonderfully sound. He holes more loritf putts than auy other player in the game ln .it least when umler pressure • which ability in a 30 holes final is a sore trial to an opponent.
At North Shore and Pupuke the championships were continued, and Alan iiiowne gopg forward as a finalist again, too, his opponent being S. Foote. E. Harper, a giant of old Rugby days, is left to oppose M. E. Goodwin in the juniors.
At Pupuke, three of the four who remain to contest the senior final are match players of worth, so that whatever the result of the match to complete the semifinals subsequent play will be full of interest. The best match on Saturday wn.i between .T. Armstrong and C. 11. Palmer, which, when boiled down, was a win for accuracy at the expense of hitting. Xext week the present champion, H. E. Nicholas, plays the veteran, H. A. Randrup. to decide who shall be the remaining semi-finalist. So we leave the champions and aspiring champions till time tells what the Fates have decided.
