SIXTY YEARS OLD.

FAMOUS OXFORD COLLEGE.

OXFORD. To mark its attainment of 60 yeans of age in 1939, Somerville College, Oxford, in compiling a register of summary biographical records. retails of the carers of all the women, distinguished or Jiumhle, who htfVe passed through the college in its first 00 years will be published next year in a email book which should be as valuable a historical memorial ae a personal souvenir.

Not only will the contributions of each woman to the intellectual or social life of England be written down, but those interested will be able to tell at a glance what parts of England, what sections of society, or from what foreign countries the large proportion of students ha* come, and it will be. interesting to eee whether college-educated women have tended to send their daughter* to follow in their footsteps.

Recently a writer commented on the exceptionally large number of good writers contributed by Somerville College in this century. Mis* Rose Macaulay, Mise Dorothy Sayers, Miss Muriel St. Clare Byrne and Miss Winifred Holtby immediately suggest themselves to the mind, and there are, many others. Not less important are the diligent scholars who live out-of-the-way lives, the scientists, social workers and school mistressee who may not be known to the general public, but who continue to raise the level of women's mental responsibility.
