A night porter rescued Mr. J. T) Smith, of Wellington, from his bedroom. Mr. Smith was in bed on the third floor suffering from influenza. The porter run tho gauntlet of the flames iind. smashing down the locked door, dragged Mr. Smith out.
Altogether nine people were treated for burn*, shock and abrasions. Two in hospital, include Mrs. Euphemia Comfort, aged »13, of .Vow Zealand, who suffered injuries to her cheet. Her condition is satisfr.ctorv.
Mr. and Mrs. A. Webb, of Christrhtireh, escaped unscathed. Mr. Wpbb 'ftid that he was in bed when he heard the crackling of flumes and the room »eerhed to suddenly grow hot.
"I cnlled my wife," he added, "and we both raced towards* the door and !hpn the flumes spread over our carpet.

In response to Mm. Redmond's pleari , - MTS Mr. H. S. Macey, of New Zealand, went up in the lift to the fifth floor to 'rv to find William Redmond. A Now Zealander, Mr. H. Hoik, a crack pigeon shot, who was staying at thfi hotel, returned shortly after the niithrenk, Hβ was concerned with recovering his puns, but the police would not allow him upstairs.
