INJURED CALF.
CRUELTY ALLEGED. CHARGE AGAINST FARMER. 1 SOCIETY TAKES ACTION. Edwin Morley, fanner, of Great South Road, Papatoctoe, appeared in the Police Court at Otahuhu to-day before Mr. W. ,R. McKcan, S.M., to answer a. charge of unreasonably failing to destroy an animal. He pleaded not guilty. The prosecution was undertaken by Mr. N. Webster, inspector for the S.P.C.A., through Mr. Newhery. I According to a report from the S.P.O.A. inspector, the animal, a heifer, which had been caught up in a wire fence when it was 10 days old, had been kept for eight months with its right foreleg doubled hack at the knee. Morley had taken the animal to a slaughter, house on duly 25 for sale, and at that time the knee was considerably swollen and was bleeding. The sore on the knee measured oyer Bin square on the pad which had been formed by the animal walking on it.
Motley, in defence, said lie had dressed the wound in (lie first instance and noticed later Hint the leg had contracted, lmt as tlio animal was doing well and running with its mother, lie left it until it was eight months old. He denied any cruelty.
In fining defendant £5 and costs. including £1 1/ solicitors' fees. Mr. MeKeau said lie found some difficulty in understanding defendant keeping this animal and considered that ho had a very curious outlook.
