BETTING SYSTEMS.
•T. Orr still persists in one part of his letter that it "costs twice as much under the win and place as it does under the single pool," but he must know that the only near basis of comj>arison is 10/ each way on the win and place as against £1 (for two dividends) under the single pool. He shows, I thiak. that he now knows thie, for in his next statement he says that if we spend fl on a one-two machine and our horse we get more than we would by putting 10/ each way on the win machine. This is another wild statement tending to confuse the issue in some minds, which would possibly overlook the fact, if such figures could really be compared, that they would be getting an extra chance in their place bet under the win and place (where there were eight starters), or, in other words, would be taking a longer chance under the one-two system. He says there is "no element of compulsion" but this is splitting hairs, as the alternative is to stay away or sit on the stand without wajjer. ing. My question as to why the Takapuna Club continued With the win and place when racing at Kllerslie is airily | dismissed as being outside his province to answer, but seeing that he toki us the Auckland Club "dropped this like a hot potato" he might at least have told ns where the Takapuna Club obtained its asbestos gloves. As a straight-out punter, when allowed to be, I like to think when "the day" arrives that I am getting the longest dividend obtainable. My opinion expressed several years ago that the clubs which adopt 5/ "each way wagering will win out in the end remains unchanged. IN THE SHADE.
