OVER THE AERIAL.
RADIO NOTES. FROM FAR AND NEAR.
(By TL~N T E-ISr.)
Sets priced as low as £5 were exhibited at the Radio Olympia just held iu London, but they would cost nearly double that before they could be retailed in this country, and would not be adequate for Xew Zealand requirements. The eminent author. H. G. Wells, is coming to Australia next year to attend a scit'neo congress at Canberra. The Australian Broadcasting Commission ha« signed him up to give six broadcasts over the national network. The niofct-used recording in Germany is stated to be "Ramon;-." which is put on the air to jam Moscow- every time the HiKMan short wave stations begin broadcasting "news" in German. Extraordinary as it may appear, the (ieiiinin mystery station' which radiates iuiti-Xazi views remains undetected, although it hal been operating for about a year. It transmits on 29.8 metres, from 10 till II p.m. daily, and in spite of detective sets remains a mystery.
Once a set gets the least bit "off colour." and particularly if background noises, however slight* develop, then have it attended to at once. If not, the breakdown of one inexpensive component may bring ruin on other parts. Even a valve replacement is not so simple as it might seem, there being over 1.10 different typo* of receiver valves, many, till hough totally different, fitting identical sockets. Expert attention is cheapest and immediate attention necessary.
The vajraries of short-wave necessitate the Daventiy Xo. 1 transmission, intended fur [•(•(■option in Xew Zealand, tiikinp place between 4.30 and G. 30 p.m. Those are not ideal hours for general con ven ienee and it is, therefore, fortunate that with the advent ef our sjiriiifr it is j)ossil)le for the transmission to take place later in the evening, owinji to a little understood change in the Heaviside layer. As this elianpe is progressive the alteration in transmitting times is made in stapes. The first step was taken on Sunday, when the Kmpire stations commenced' at ">.30 p.m. I iK'ie were ehanpes. too, in the wavelengths ~f most of the five transmitters.
