To find the origin of the phrase, "Riding the high horee," meaning to be conceited and trying- to appear better than others, we must go a long way hack, right to the leged* of Greek mythology. Here we read of Bellerophon. one of the heroes, who owned the winged horoe Pegasim. He performed many great deeds on this wonderful steed, but at la*t became too ambitious, for, mounted upon Pegaeue. he attempted to reach the heaven of the gods, thereby incurring their wrath. He was struck down to earth by them, and thus ended his career.
