SEAFARER OF OLD SCHOOL CAPTAIN 6. HARVEY'S DEATH. A seafarer of the old school, and one whose life' was full of experiences, Captain George Harvey, formerly of Whaugapararoa, has died in Auckland at the age of o*. He sailed in the clipper •hip Cutty Sark and knew the notorious "Bully" Hayes. Captain Harvey not only knew life at sea In all kinds of sailing craft; but also served in steam. He navigated a single screw ves*J of only 37 tons from England to New Zealand more than naif a century ago. . Born in Staffordshire in 1843 Captain Harvey went to sea at anearly age. At 14 Tears of age he "signed on" as boy la the Ann Wilson, bound from LiverEx>l to Wellington with 222 emigrants: e left the ship in New Zealand and was' employed as boy and' seaman in sailers on the coast and in the "black binding" trade in the Western Pacific. This consisted in recruiting native labour, and conveying it to various Islands where plantations had been established. Tiring of this business Captain Harvey shipped back to England and there obtained his mate's ticket. On account of bad times he had to ship as an A.B. in the Hallowe'en, owned by Captain John Willis, and bound for China and out there he was transferred to the Cutty Sark for the famous "tea race" home in 1870 with the Thamopylae.
